The Real Puerto Rico: Outside of San Juan

From the rich blended history of Ponce and the local favorite beaches in Borinquen, to a little-known luxurious and tranquil hotel in Isabela and adventure in Fajardo, the island of Puerto Rico is a versatile destination that caters to all types of travelers.

The Pearl of the South

After departing San Juan, embark on a scenic one hour and fifteen minutes journey through the verdant Puerto Rican countryside and the majestic La Cordillera Central—the island’s interior mountain range. You’ll wind through lush hills and dramatic valleys before descending into Ponce, affectionately known as La Perla del Sur, or The Pearl of the South.

During my visit, I arranged a private walking tour with Isla Caribe. Our bilingual guide was a fountain of local lore, offering illuminating perspectives on the Spanish conquest, waves of foreign investors, enduring customs, and even the community’s colorful superstitions. (Hint: watch for the infamous mal de ojo, or evil eye.)

In Ponce, the palpable cultural fusion is a testament to its unique history. The architecture, street art, and festivals reflect the interwoven legacies of Spanish colonizers, the Indigenous Taíno, and African ancestry.

Before the days of dating apps, singles would head out into town, hoping to meet a potential partner. Women communicated their interest using handheld fans—fluttering them rapidly to show attraction or snapping them shut to signal disinterest.

Once a connection sparked, the couple would wander down the romantic Paseo de Amor, also known as Lover’s Alley, where they could share a quiet moment. Legend believes a stroll down this path together can lead to lasting love, evoking a sense of romance and nostalgia.

Hidden Luxury, Tranquility and…Coffee

Tucked along Puerto Rico’s dramatic northwest coast is a luxurious resort called Royal Isabela. It’s a haven of tranquility and luxury, known for its sweeping Atlantic Ocean views, cliffside golf course, and deep connection to nature. The resort features 20 private casitas—standalone villas with indoor and outdoor living space, each with its own plunge pool and terrace designed to blend seamlessly into the lush landscape.

Each casita boasts thoughtful touches, such as glass patio doors strategically placed across from the foot of the bed. It offered me the rare luxury of waking up to the golden glow of a Caribbean sunrise pouring in. It’s the moment that turns a morning into a lasting memory. Designed with indulgence in mind, the shower features dual shower heads and doors that open to a private, sunlit space, allowing you to bask in the warmth of the Caribbean sun while enjoying the comfort of a secluded, open-air showering experience. It’s your slice of tropical serenity.

The acclaimed Jota restaurant offers a refined farm-to-table experience with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether you're there for a romantic dinner, a celebratory brunch, or sunset cocktails, Jota delivers a sensory experience that blends nature, flavor, and artistry.

When I say this hotel is a true secret haven of luxury, I’m not exaggerating. One of the staff members shared that he grew up just down the street and had no idea it even existed—he always assumed it was simply a private, gated community until he started working there himself.

About five minutes away, you’ll find The Coffee Spot-Isabela, a small local favorite with fantastic coffee, cold brews, and an all-day breakfast menu. I sipped on a velvety cappuccino and savored thick French toast draped in Nutella and crowned with fresh strawberries while being serenaded by live piano music. Yes, a pianist arrives each morning with graceful melodies, adding a layer of magic to the experience.

Local Favorite in Borinquen

Once a military port used by the U.S. Air Force for rescue boats—hence the name—Crash Boat Beach is now one of the island’s most beloved beaches. The beach pulses with energy as food kiosks and vendors line the sand, serving up Puerto Rican favorites like pinchos and mofongo that fill the air with irresistible aromas. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, lounging under an umbrella with a piña colada in hand as kids jumped off the pier into the clear water and reggaeton music played from several speakers.

As an amateur wine connoisseur, I was delighted to find Set The Bar Restaurant & Wine Market just a few minutes away from Crash Boat Beach. With a friendly staff and warm ambience, it’s a stylish and inviting spot that blends a love for fine wine with a flair for creative tapas-style dishes that elevate the dining experience. A perfect pairing of rich flavors and fine wine transforms every bite into an enjoyable experience.

Adventure, Watersports, and a Secret Beach

Located on Puerto Rico’s eastern coast, Fajardo is a vibrant seaside town known for its natural beauty, rich maritime culture, and outdoor adventures. I booked a boat tour to the island of Culebra for an unforgettable snorkeling experience and exploration of pristine white-sand beaches. The tour offered the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation while sipping cold rum punch.

Some locals excitedly recommended La Estación for dinner. Housed in a converted gas station, La Estación is a beloved culinary hotspot that blends the soul of Caribbean flavors with the smoky allure of barbecue. From the parking lot, you smell ingredients like sofrito, local citrus, and herbs.

While eating dinner, the waitress provided directions to a secret beach nearby. Ironically, the beach is called Playa Escondida, or Hidden Beach. The next day, I completed a 25-minute hike along a narrow trail lined with a mangrove forest. Don’t forget your bug spray! Eventually, I arrived at a beautiful, secluded beach. Although the beach is gorgeous, beware of its beauty and serenity. Playa Escondida has powerful currents and is considered very dangerous.

The best decision I made was venturing beyond San Juan. Ponce, Borinquen, Fajardo, and Isabela opened the door to a more authentic side of Puerto Rico. I experienced hidden treasure troves and beloved local spots that revealed the island’s rich charm, beauty, history, and diversity. All corners of the island provide something for every kind of traveler, from breathtaking beaches and thrilling water adventures to vibrant culture and awe-inspiring natural beauty. Every town was unique, making for a truly unforgettable experience.
